The Issues

There are many issues facing the Village and it's residents at this time.  Right now the Village needs to focus on retaining it's core qualities.  Each of the issues noted below are a snapshot of some of the more visible and immediate concerns in our Village.  Whether we agree or disagree on the issues, it is imperative that we show respect and civility in our words and actions.

The Economy

We would be remiss in thinking that what's going on throughout the United States and the economy would not be affecting us in our Village.  Recently, Governor Christie indicated that he will cut spending and limit municipal tax increases to 2.5% annually.  He has sent a clear message to Ridgewood and Bergen County that if you can make do for yourself, than you will have to!

As a result, our planned budget will be burdened with additional costs.  We as a Village will need to take immediate and necessary steps to protect our essential services and to plan for unknown but anticipated cost increases.

Downtown Business District

One of Ridgewood's greatest assets is it's central business district with the NJ Transit line running through it.  Since the founding of our village in the late 1800's, business has been centered on this train line.   Over the years and through economic ups and downs,  entrepreneurial village residents have opened store fronts, offices and restaurants with the intent on making a living and providing needed essential services to the village.   These members of our community take enormous risk by keeping their doors open and are the life blood of our business district.    We must figure a way to keep our village thriving while being sympathetic to the needs of business owners and landlords.

Essential Services

Ridgewood prides itself on providing quality services to our community.  Most of us moved here with the understanding and belief that our taxes provided for the management and viability of these services.  In an economic downturn, the village must be mindful of it's spending and think of more efficient ways to provide these services.  In order of importance, we need to keep our citizens safe,  provide quality water and sanitation and allow for quiet enjoyment of parks and recreation.

Valley Renewal

I was born in the Valley Hospital, my three children were born there as well.  My oldest child was born prematurely and was in residence in the NICU for about a month.  Since then and over the years we have received nothing but quality care and service from Valley.  It is a top rate hospital.

Graydon Pool

As residents for over 13 years, our family has been a member of Graydon since our children were small.  We have enjoyed many a summer there.   As with many village families, our major concern has always been for the safe and clean enjoyment of this natural pool.   The village has made great strides in cleaning the water, maintaining the facility and improving the play areas.
